Brown’s idiosyncratic rhythms are all the more hypnotizing in Tubby’s cozy setting, and Chen’s furious guitar work cuts and hums with sounds seemingly only attainable on stage. It's an album both challenging and immediate. The expanded 75 Dollar Bill's affinity for improvisation and the avant-garde even leads to a rousing take on the Ornette Coleman classic, 'Friends and Neighbors' that feels right at home in their own repertoire. The listener can't help but feel present and part of the communal joy and catharsis being shared here in this room. This performance at Tubby’s turned out not only to be the last show of their tour, but the last show possible as the pandemic hit. The two lengthy improvs build from placid beginnings, as each member adds various percussion instruments to the growing cacophony, before reedsman Peter Van Der Locht (at times playing two saxes at once á la Rahsaan Roland Kirk) and trumpeter Boy Raaymakers let loose. Her range swings from fluttering highs to earthen lows, with a distinctiveness that evokes the enduring quality of early Asylum Records and the new classics of Angel Olsen. When she wasn't on set, she scrawled hundreds of poems and lyrics, and set them to acoustic guitar or piano. As with acting, songwriting for Black was a study in confession and in character. They began the songwriting process by flipping through Nancy’s pulp fiction collection and pulling provocative phrases from the lurid titles and hard-boiled storylines. Then, they set out to create new stories from personal, feminist perspectives. All the songs were composed incrementally by passing tracks back and forth between Maine and Maryland during the late pandemic. Where their 2019 debut had a startling, first-kiss energy, ‘Creekbeds’ is reflective, momentous, poetic. Textures multiply, evoking both the endlessness of sky and the terror of a bottomless well. There’s a daring sort of faith in these songs, the way the three members trust in the resonance and persistence and joy built into each song and the way they trust in each other. This faith provides a tender, messy space for thoughts, feelings, outbursts, joys, and sadnesses. The observations made on this record – from petty irritations to existential crises – are articulated in a way that feels always like solidarity, never like whining. These collected recordings were committed to cassette in January 2009 while the band regrouped as a three piece with Kevin Boyer on guitar and vocals, Shelley Salant on bass and Matt Ziolkowski on drums. The songs on the lp were originally released on two extremely limited cassette runs shortly after recording, with 5 tracks also included on the 12” Blunt Instrumental ep released on Night People records. Fitting in well with the Tyvek ethos, the 12 tracks range from short and blistered punk blasts to the fully blasted 10-minute space rock of Cold Sun Blind My Eye. Spun together, the album is a great reminder of Tyvek’s stream-of-consciousness style and passion. Lyrically looser and occasionally off-the-cuff, it also hits with some great tunes. An EP of sorts, as these six wonderful tracks clocks in at over 31 minutes! A double one-disc EP? No matter what, Idle Easel sees the band in a transitional period, as the duo of Amelia Besseny and Cooper Bowman left Newcastle for Hobart, Tasmania during the recording sessions. The record has this heavy feeling of leaving something behind for something new, a feeling that is kind of boosted by the rather melancholic, autumnal presence that runs throughout Idle Easel. Blasting these songs in a currently very rainy Gothenburg in full, blown-out autumn mode certainly adds, but there's more to it than that.

'Wolkenträume' blends prominent Tassie location recordings with sparse keyboard melodies and angel-like singing - which after slowly coming down from an intense Ron Nagorcka period feels like the perfect bridge back to the grim, cold, northern reality. 'Autumnal Hymn' is one of those rather minimal, lovely piano songs courtesy of Amelia, with harmonies that could only be Troth. Placed halfway through the EP, the peculiar 'Kind Of Cure' almost comes like a palette cleanser from the unform. Exquisite thickness, while not exactly jolly, a sort-of eccentric and lush take on folk music. 'Angel Not So Easy' has that hazy club-feel, coming from the same place as the title track on Forget The Curse and the IDDB 7" A-side, always maintaining that glorious DIY-edge. 'Sunflower' further explores the mixture of beats and saxophone hinted at on the last album, here with wobbly, seasick-inducing qualities of the best possible kind. On the closer 'Sentimental Object' you can hear traces of Troth's early cassette days.

- Matthias Andersson/Discreet Music, October 2023

Limited to 300. Dustbin of Empathy opens with a voyage across Europe and down the generations, a tribute to the tenacity of the small people who survive massive events. One tune is about a simple nightwatchman, who “guards the square”, servant of a city, observer of the puzzle. Another has an anti-war bias. Peace! Another is a trip of a kind, Angel (The Astronomer), an eerie voyage into the “sinuses” of space. Most of the tunes were co-written. A couple were penned by Direen alone. The high quality of these recordings, and the independence experience of the musicians who made it happen, make it likely Radio New Zealand and local stations will playlist them. It is hard to choose one stand-out track for campus radios worldwide, will it be the alluring “Lately Rain”, the epic Citizens of Nowhere that opens the album, the harder edge of Anvil Dark or the inventive net cast by Custody of Love and others? Pure quality to take you from Dustbin to Empathy.

SPECIAL BONUS album "Nictate" available on cassette as a pre-order add-on. Nictate's Side A is mostly Direen/McManus/Swanson spillovers from the Dustbin relay sessions, an alternative route from the LP. But this is no residuum. In 22 minutes, six tales of marginality pass by cafés of experimentalism and heresy, intersecting with psycho-acoustic secrets known only to the sound producers. Guests include distinctive piano from Tony Crow (The Thieves, Lambchop), the grace of Hawk and a Hacksaw's Heather Trost (violin) and Jeremy Barnes' scene-setting accordion (Hawk and a Hacksaw, Neutral Milk Hotel).

Side B is no B Side. The music grew from a book published by Grapefruit in 2023 ('100 Years of Darkness'). The result was fifteen
micro-tunes that fit together like an armadillo’s tiles. Rachel Shearer (who is the Lovely Midget) had, however, been busy since the late 80’s in the rock groups Angelhead (a cassette on XPRESSWAY), and Queen Meanie Puss (singles on Siltbreeze and Flying Nun). She spent the latter part of the 1990s perfecting her engineering skills and developing the modus operandi that made Lovely Midget possible.

The music of Lovely Midget is all about texture, there’s not just an LM ‘sound’, there’s an LM ‘feel’ as well. This is achieved by careful and extensive digital modification of recorded sounds. Their origin might be instrumental (as she claims for much of this album) but they sound ultimately anything but. This is a painstaking, almost lapidary approach, which produces highly polished fragments of sound, constructed like a mosaic into more-than-lifesize pictures in sound. Sounds are sanded away, then reconstructed from piles of dust-like granules; they are polished into unnatural brilliance, then dirtied up again into new shapes mimicking nature, but with subtle yet undeniable differences. At its most extreme this can produce an other-worldly ‘underwater’ sound, where every sonic event is heard through a curtain of intangible but unavoidable substance. Even the ‘songs’, where these exist as frameworks for the pieces, have been stripped back to their musical chassis and reassembled in the same order but to a different end. The effect is like listening to the ghosts of a yet unborn generation, paradoxical and uncanny.

Lovely Midget was thus totally contemporary in the production sense at the fin de siecle, using state-of-the-art tools, but the music was and remains uncategorisable, achingly cool NZ soundwork for the 21st Century. While some might ‘chill out’ to this kind of thing, the truly discerning will quite simply find it too damn exciting. Pour yourself a glass of top-shelf vodka straight from the freezer and listen up as these beautiful dreamy drones and hovering inverted sound sculptures softly clash like floating icebergs of sound in a frozen fjord.
